Ken Buhler

Selections from the Faithful Compass Series

March 11 - April 29, 2023

Argosy Books is pleased to present a selection of work from Ken Buhler’s Faithful Compass series.  A painter known for his colorful abstract canvases, prints, and works on paper,  Buhler has long admired the richness and complexity of marbled paper. In 2019, he learned how to make it himself and spent much of the Pandemic lockdown exploring this new form in relation to his paintings.  Initially, he utilized parts of antique maps in these compositions, finding a resonance between the marbleized patterns and certain forms in the maps. As Buhler scaled up the size, he found himself leaving the maps behind and gravitating toward fragments of paper he had painted with watercolor.  A selection of these works will be on view on the second floor of the bookstore from March 11 - April 29.

The Argosy Book Store is New York City’s oldest independent bookstore. Located at 116 East 59th Street in Midtown Manhattan, it occupies an entire six-story townhouse with various sales floors specializing in first editions, Americana, leather bindings, antique maps and prints, and autographs.
